Southern California Faces Air Quality Alerts Due to Windblown Dust
US · Published May 26, 2026
Residents across Southern California, particularly in the Coachella Valley and Imperial Valley, are under air quality alerts due to windblown dust.
The National Weather Service (NWS) and South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) have issued advisories urging people to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.
The Coachella Valley advisory, covering cities like Palm Springs, Indio, and Palm Desert, began Monday afternoon and is expected to last until early Wednesday morning.

Why It's Important?

The poor air quality poses significant health risks, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM10) can lead to respiratory issues, asthma attacks, and even cardiovascular complications. Short-term effects include coughing, airway irritation, and difficulty breathing, while prolonged exposure may result in more severe health problems. Tens of thousands of residents in affected areas are advised to limit outdoor activities and take precautions to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.
